Last night, my friend S and I went to see Shine: A Burlesque Musical. The show is a collaboration by the Wet Spots and the Screaming Chickens. When we went to buy tickets, they sold out but luckily they released a midnight show. We jumped on the available seats fairly quickly as we didn’t want to miss the show.

The night of the show, we grabbed some drinks and got 2nd row middle seats. Perfect seats for a overview of the stage and to be close enough to see the performers up nice and close. Shine Mionne (played by Cass King of the Wet Spots) and her close knit burlesque family is trying to save and resurrect The Aristocrat with the help  funding by Richard Suit.  The show was funny, sexy and the lyrics on the songs were catching and entertaining. I won’t go into the story line too much but you can check out reviews of the show here. The cast features performers of a variety of shapes and sizes. It’s a nice change. Beauty doesn’t equal a size 2 and Shine proves that by showcasing the sexy side of each performer. I’m personally a fan of women who aren’t what mainstream says is hot. Shine serves a reminder for those that forget that beauty comes in all sizes. It’s brought up during the show as well. It’s empowering.

My favourite song of the show would be “Doing the nasty” (not sure if that’s the correct name). Besides getting hot during the show, that song nailed it for me. The Wet Spots are a favourite of mine and the songs lyrics fit in perfectly with the musical. The show combined comedy, tassel twilling, full-frontal nudity, hilarious songs, sexy dancing and the allure of sex. It was a great night out and I couldn’t stop myself from going home and jerking off.

Couldn't resist picking up these at the show

We are lucky to have a thriving burlesque community in Vancouver, BC. You can check out a show here or even take classes on burlesque. Check out a local show and support a sex-positive community that breaks down the conventional and mainstream view of sexuality, size and gender.  You’ll have a blast.

I’m hoping that more burlesque shows are able to break into more mainstream venues and provide a chance for a bigger audience to experience the shows.  Hopefully the success from Shine will allow the opportunity for more. The majority of Vancouver could afford to loosen up a bit and have some fun.
